How to Recycle an Old Phone

Recycling your old phone protects personal data and keeps toxic materials out of landfills. Most phones contain valuable metals that can be recovered and reused in new devices.

  1. Back up your data. Create a complete backup before recycling. On iPhone, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. On Android, go to Settings > System > Backup and enable Google One backup. Wait for the backup to complete before proceeding.
  2. Sign out of all accounts. Remove your device from all linked accounts to prevent unauthorized access. On iPhone, go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out. On Android, go to Settings > Accounts and remove each account individually. Also sign out of Find My iPhone or Find My Device.
  3. Perform a factory reset. Erase all personal data with a complete factory reset. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. On Android, go to Settings > System > Reset > Erase all data (factory reset). This process takes 10-30 minutes.
  4. Remove the case and accessories. Take off any phone case, screen protector, or pop socket. Remove charging cables and earbuds from the box if recycling the entire package. Keep accessories you want to reuse or recycle them separately through appropriate programs.
  5. Find a certified recycling program. Locate an authorized e-waste recycler through your carrier, manufacturer, or local government. Major carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile offer free recycling at retail stores. Apple and Samsung provide mail-in recycling programs with prepaid shipping labels.
  6. Drop off or ship your device. Bring your phone to the designated drop-off location or package it for shipping. Most programs provide a receipt or confirmation email. Retail locations typically process devices immediately, while mail-in programs send confirmation within 5-10 business days.
