How to Set Up TP-Link Deco Mesh WiFi System

TP-Link Deco creates a seamless mesh network that eliminates dead zones throughout your home. The system uses one main unit connected to your modem and additional nodes to extend coverage.

  1. Download the Deco app and create account. Install the TP-Link Deco app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Open the app and tap 'Sign Up' to create a TP-Link ID account. Verify your email address when prompted.
  2. Connect the main Deco unit to your modem. Unplug your existing router if connected. Use the included Ethernet cable to connect the main Deco unit's yellow port to your modem's Ethernet port. Plug the Deco unit into power and wait for the LED to turn solid yellow.
  3. Add the main unit in the Deco app. Open the Deco app and tap 'Let's Begin'. Select your Deco model from the list. When prompted, scan the QR code on the bottom of your main unit or enter the serial number manually.
  4. Configure your network settings. Choose your internet connection type when prompted—most users select 'Dynamic IP'. Create a network name and password for your new mesh network. The app will test your internet connection and configure the main unit.
  5. Set up additional Deco units. Place additional Deco units in rooms where you need coverage, keeping them within 30 feet of existing units. Plug each unit into power and wait for the LED to pulse blue. In the app, tap 'Add Another Deco' and follow the prompts.
  6. Optimize placement and test coverage. The app will show signal strength between units with green, yellow, or red indicators. Move any units showing red connections closer to the main unit. Test WiFi speed in different rooms using the app's built-in speed test feature.
  7. Configure advanced settings. Access the 'More' tab in the app to set up guest networks, parental controls, and quality of service settings. Enable automatic firmware updates under 'Advanced' settings to keep your system secure.
