How to Set Up Parental Controls on Your Router
Router-level parental controls let you manage internet access for every device on your network without installing software on individual computers or phones. This approach ensures consistent filtering and time restrictions that children cannot easily bypass.
- Access your router's admin panel. Open a web browser and navigate to your router's IP address, typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Enter your admin username and password when prompted. If you haven't changed these credentials, check the sticker on your router for the default login information.
- Locate the parental controls section. Navigate to the parental controls or access control section in your router's interface. Common menu locations include Advanced → Access Control, Security → Parental Controls, or a dedicated Parental Controls tab in the main menu. The exact location varies by router manufacturer and firmware version.
- Create user profiles for family members. Set up individual profiles for each family member who needs internet restrictions. Enter a profile name and assign specific devices by selecting their MAC addresses from the connected devices list. Most routers display device names alongside MAC addresses to help identify phones, tablets, and computers.
- Configure time restrictions. Set internet access schedules for each profile by selecting allowed days and time ranges. Choose bedtime restrictions like blocking access from 9 PM to 7 AM on school nights, or limiting weekend usage hours. Enable pause internet options to temporarily block access during homework or family time.
- Set up website filtering. Configure content filtering by selecting age-appropriate categories or adding specific websites to block lists. Choose from preset filtering levels like Child, Teen, or Adult, or create custom blocked and allowed website lists. Enable safe search enforcement for Google, Bing, and YouTube to filter inappropriate search results.
- Enable usage monitoring. Turn on internet usage tracking to monitor browsing history and time spent online for each profile. Configure daily or weekly usage limits that automatically block access once the time quota is reached. Set up notifications to alert you when limits are approaching or exceeded.
- Apply and test your settings. Save your parental control configuration and restart your router if prompted. Test the controls by connecting a restricted device and verifying that blocked websites are inaccessible and time restrictions activate as scheduled. Confirm that unrestricted devices maintain full internet access.
