How to Set Up a Powerline Adapter
Powerline adapters use your home's electrical wiring to extend network connectivity to areas with poor Wi-Fi coverage. They create a wired network connection through any standard electrical outlet.
- Connect the first adapter to your router. Plug the first powerline adapter into a wall outlet near your router. Connect an Ethernet cable from your router's LAN port to the Ethernet port on the adapter. Wait for the power LED to turn solid green or white.
- Install the second adapter at the destination. Plug the second adapter into a wall outlet in the room where you need network access. The power LED should illuminate within 10 seconds. Both adapters must be on the same electrical circuit for optimal performance.
- Pair the adapters using the security button. Press and hold the security or pair button on the first adapter for 2 seconds until the LED starts blinking. Within 2 minutes, press and hold the security button on the second adapter for 2 seconds. Both LEDs should turn solid when pairing completes.
- Connect your device to the network. Connect an Ethernet cable from the second adapter to your device, or connect to the adapter's Wi-Fi network if it includes wireless capability. The network name and password are typically printed on the adapter label.
- Test the connection speed. Run a speed test on your connected device to verify performance. Powerline speeds typically range from 50-200 Mbps depending on your home's electrical wiring quality and distance between adapters.
- Configure additional settings if needed. Access the adapter's web interface by typing 192.168.1.1 or the IP shown on the device label into your browser. Here you can change the network name, password, and enable features like QoS or guest networks on Wi-Fi enabled models.
