Choosing the right monitor for photo editing requires balancing color accuracy, resolution, and display technology to ensure your images look correct across different devices. The monitor becomes your primary tool for accurate image assessment and professional-quality edits.

  1. Choose the right panel technology. Select an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel for the most accurate colors and wide viewing angles. VA panels offer good contrast but compromise color accuracy at angles. Avoid TN panels entirely for photo work as they have poor color reproduction and narrow viewing angles.
  2. Verify color space coverage. Look for monitors covering at least 95% sRGB for web work or 90% Adobe RGB for print photography. Check the manufacturer specifications for color gamut coverage percentages. Professional monitors often specify coverage of DCI-P3 for video work as well.

Higher brightness helps when working in bright rooms but can cause eye strain. Look for 1000:1 minimum contrast ratio, though IPS panels typically achieve 1000-1400:1 naturally.
  6. Consider hardware calibration support. Choose monitors compatible with colorimeters like X-Rite i1Display Pro or Datacolor SpyderX for ongoing calibration. Hardware calibration adjusts the monitor's internal settings rather than graphics card lookup tables, providing more accurate and stable results.
  7. Check connectivity and ergonomic features. Ensure the monitor includes USB-C with power delivery if using modern laptops, plus DisplayPort and HDMI for flexibility. Look for height adjustment, tilt, and pivot capabilities to position the screen at eye level. Anti-glare coatings help in bright environments.
