How to Set Up a New MacBook

Setting up a new MacBook requires configuring your Apple ID, transferring data from your previous device, and adjusting key system preferences. This process takes 15-30 minutes depending on your data transfer method.

  1. Power on and select language. Press the power button on the top-right of the keyboard or Touch ID sensor. Select your language and region from the dropdown menus. Click Continue to proceed to the next screen.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi. Choose your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter the password when prompted. If your network doesn't appear, click Other Network Options to enter it manually. Wait for the connection to establish before continuing.
  3. Sign in with your Apple ID. Enter your Apple ID email and password on the sign-in screen. If you don't have an Apple ID, click Create a Free Apple ID and follow the prompts. Enable two-factor authentication if prompted for additional security.
  4. Set up Touch ID or password. Place your finger on the Touch ID sensor multiple times to register your fingerprint, or create a password if your model doesn't have Touch ID. Add additional fingerprints by going to System Preferences > Touch ID & Password later.
  5. Transfer data from another device. Choose Migration Assistant to transfer from another Mac, Time Machine backup, or PC. Select your transfer method and follow the on-screen instructions. For immediate use, select Set Up Later and transfer data afterward.
  6. Configure iCloud services. Select which iCloud services to enable: Photos, Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Safari, Keychain, and Find My. Choose iCloud Drive to sync documents across devices. Click Continue to proceed.
7. Set up Siri and screen time. Choose whether to enable Siri voice assistant and select your preferred voice. Configure Screen Time to track app usage or skip this step. Review the analytics sharing options and make your selection.
  8. Complete setup and explore the desktop. Click Continue through the final screens to reach the macOS desktop. Open System Preferences to adjust display settings, trackpad sensitivity, and other preferences. Launch the App Store to download essential applications.
