How to Set Up a New Chromebook

Setting up a new Chromebook takes about 10 minutes and requires only a Google account and Wi-Fi connection. Chrome OS guides you through the essential configuration steps automatically.

  1. Power on and select language. Press the power button located on the side or above the keyboard. When the welcome screen appears, select your language from the dropdown menu and click Continue. The system will load the setup wizard.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi network. Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter the password when prompted. Click Connect to establish the connection. The Chromebook will verify the connection and download any pending system updates automatically.
  3. Accept Terms of Service. Read through Google's Terms of Service and Chrome OS Terms. Check the boxes to accept both agreements, then click Accept and Continue. This step is required to proceed with setup.
  4. Sign in with Google account. Enter your Gmail address and password on the sign-in screen. If you don't have a Google account, click Create account to make one. Two-factor authentication will prompt for verification if enabled on your account.
  5. Review sync and backup settings. Chrome OS displays your sync preferences including bookmarks, passwords, and apps. Toggle off any items you don't want to sync from other devices. Click Accept and Continue to proceed with the selected settings.
  6. Set up PIN and screen lock. Choose whether to set up a PIN for quick sign-in or skip this step. If setting up a PIN, enter a 6-digit number twice to confirm. Select your screen lock timeout preference from the dropdown menu.
  7. Complete setup and explore. Click Get Started to finish the setup process. Chrome OS will show a brief tour of key features including the shelf, launcher, and settings. The desktop will load with your synced apps and bookmarks ready to use.
