How to Set Up a Ring Light for Video Calls
A ring light creates even, flattering illumination that eliminates harsh shadows during video calls. Position it correctly and your face will appear well-lit and professional on camera.
- Position the ring light at eye level. Place the ring light directly behind your camera or laptop, with the center of the light aligned with your eye level when seated. If using a tripod, adjust the height to 18-24 inches from your face. The light should be perpendicular to your face, not angled up or down.
- Mount your camera through the ring light center. Thread your webcam or phone mount through the center hole of the ring light. Secure the camera so it sits flush with the front of the light. For laptops with built-in cameras, position the ring light as close to the screen as possible without blocking the camera lens.
- Set the color temperature to 3200K-5600K. Adjust the ring light to a warm white setting around 3200K-4000K for indoor environments or 5000K-5600K to match daylight from windows. Most ring lights have a dial or button to cycle through color temperatures. Test different settings during a video call to see what looks most natural.
- Adjust brightness to 30-50% intensity. Start with the ring light at 30% brightness and gradually increase until your face is evenly lit without appearing washed out. Your face should be the brightest element in the frame, but facial features should remain clearly defined. Check your video preview to ensure proper exposure.
- Position yourself 18-24 inches from the light. Sit approximately arm's length from the ring light for optimal coverage. Too close and the light will be harsh and create unflattering shadows in your eye sockets. Too far and the light becomes ineffective. Adjust your chair position rather than moving the light setup.
- Eliminate competing light sources. Turn off overhead lights and close blinds to prevent mixed lighting that creates color casts or uneven illumination. If you need ambient room lighting, use lamps positioned behind you and out of camera view. The ring light should be your primary light source.
- Test and fine-tune during a video call. Start a video call with yourself using your preferred platform to see exactly how you appear to others. Make final adjustments to brightness, color temperature, and positioning while viewing your live video feed. Save these settings for future calls.
