How to Set Up a KVM Switch for Multiple Computers
A KVM switch lets you control multiple computers using a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor setup. This eliminates desk clutter and allows seamless switching between systems without unplugging cables.
- Power down all computers and disconnect peripherals. Shut down all computers you plan to connect to the KVM switch. Unplug your existing keyboard, mouse, and monitor cables from your primary computer. This prevents any electrical damage during setup.
- Connect your peripherals to the KVM switch console ports. Plug your keyboard into the keyboard console port, mouse into the mouse console port, and monitor into the video console port on the KVM switch. These ports are typically labeled 'Console' and use standard connectors like USB-A, VGA, HDMI, or DisplayPort.
- Connect the first computer to port 1. Take the included KVM cable set and connect the keyboard, mouse, and video cables to your first computer's corresponding ports. Connect the other end to port 1 on the KVM switch. Ensure all connections are secure.
- Connect additional computers to remaining ports. Repeat the connection process for each additional computer, using ports 2, 3, and 4 as needed. Each computer requires its own set of KVM cables connecting keyboard, mouse, and video signals to the switch.
- Power on the KVM switch. Connect the KVM switch's power adapter to the unit and plug it into a power outlet. The switch should display LED indicators showing it's receiving power. Most units will default to port 1 as the active connection.
- Power on computers and test switching. Start up your computers one at a time. Test the KVM switch by pressing the port selection buttons on the front panel or using the keyboard shortcut (typically Scroll Lock + Scroll Lock + number key). Verify that keyboard, mouse, and video all switch properly between systems.
- Configure any software-based features. Install any driver software that came with your KVM switch for advanced features like hotkey switching, mouse sensitivity adjustment, or monitor resolution settings. Some KVM switches work entirely hardware-based and require no additional software.
