How to Set Up a Keyboard Tray

A keyboard tray creates an ergonomic typing position and frees up desk space. Most trays mount under your desk with clamp or screw mechanisms and include adjustable height and tilt settings.

1. Choose the mounting position. Sit in your chair and measure 26-30 inches from the floor to determine ideal keyboard height. Mark this spot on your desk's underside, ensuring at least 2 inches clearance from your thighs when seated. Check that the area is free of desk supports or drawers.
2. Install the mounting hardware. Attach the mounting clamps or brackets to your desk edge according to manufacturer specifications. For clamp-style mounts, position the clamps with padding against the desk surface to prevent scratches. For screw-mounted trays, drill pilot holes and secure with provided screws.
3. Attach the tray platform. Slide the keyboard platform onto the mounted track system. Most trays click or lock into place with spring-loaded mechanisms. Test the sliding motion to ensure smooth extension and retraction without binding or resistance.
4. Adjust the height setting. Use the height adjustment mechanism to position the tray so your elbows bend at 90 degrees when typing. Most trays use a lever or knob system for height changes. Lock the mechanism once you find the correct position.
5. Set the tilt angle. Adjust the tray's tilt using the angle controls, typically located under the platform. Start with a slight negative tilt (back edge lower than front) of 5-15 degrees. This promotes natural wrist positioning and reduces strain during extended typing sessions.
6. Test and fine-tune positioning. Place your keyboard and mouse on the tray and type for several minutes. Adjust height, tilt, or lateral position as needed for comfort. Ensure the tray slides smoothly and locks securely in both extended and retracted positions.
