How to Expand Your Home Network with a Network Switch

Learn how to connect a network switch to your router to add more Ethernet ports to your home network setup for stable, high-speed connectivity.

  1. Power on the switch. Connect the provided power adapter to the DC input port on the back of the network switch. Plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet and confirm the power LED indicator illuminates on the front panel.
  2. Link the switch to your router. Insert one end of an Ethernet cable into an open LAN port on your primary internet router. Insert the opposite end into any available port on your network switch.
  3. Confirm the link status. Observe the LED indicators on the switch ports associated with the cable connection. A solid or blinking light indicates an active data link between the router and the switch.
  4. Connect your end devices. Connect your local devices—such as gaming consoles, desktop computers, or smart TVs—to the remaining empty ports on the switch using individual Ethernet cables. The switch automatically negotiates connection speeds for each device.
  5. Verify network connectivity. Power on each connected device and check their network settings menu. Each device should receive a valid local IP address automatically from your router's DHCP server, confirming successful network integration.
