How to Stop Renting Your ISP Modem and Router
Stop paying monthly rental fees. Learn how to purchase your own modem and router to save money and improve your home network performance.
- Confirm compatibility with your service provider. Visit your ISP’s official website and locate their approved modem list. Input your specific service plan speed to ensure the hardware supports your tier, particularly if you have Gigabit speeds requiring DOCSIS 3.1 hardware.
- Purchase a DOCSIS 3.1 modem and separate router. Purchase a dedicated modem that matches your ISP’s requirements. Separate your networking needs by choosing a dedicated Wi-Fi router, which provides better performance and future-proofing than integrated gateway units.
- Swap the physical hardware. Disconnect the coaxial cable from your existing rental unit and attach it to the new modem. Connect the modem to your new router using a Cat6 Ethernet cable, then power both units on and wait for the lights to stabilize.
- Register the device with your ISP. Use the ISP’s self-activation portal via a mobile device on cellular data or by calling the provider’s activation line. You will need the HFC MAC address or CM MAC address printed on the label of your new modem to authorize the equipment on their network.
- Set up your private Wi-Fi network. Connect your computer to the router's default SSID using the credentials provided on the router's base sticker. Navigate to the router's configuration IP address (typically 192.168.1.1) to change the default Wi-Fi network name and create a strong, unique WPA3 password.
- Return the ISP equipment. Take the ISP-provided unit to an official retail store or shipping drop-off point as directed by your provider. Request a return receipt or tracking number and keep it for your records to ensure the monthly rental charges are permanently removed from your billing statement.
