How to Replace Your ISP Rental Router

Learn how to replace your ISP-provided rental router with your own hardware to save on monthly fees and improve network performance.

  1. Verify ISP compatibility. Consult your ISP website to confirm if they allow third-party routers and if your specific model is compatible with their network. Ensure your account is active and you have your login credentials ready for the ISP mobile application or customer portal.
  2. Disconnect the rental router. Power off the existing rental router by unplugging its power adapter from the wall outlet. Locate the Ethernet cable connecting the modem to the rental router and detach it from the WAN/Internet port on the rental device.
  3. Connect the new router. Connect the Ethernet cable from your modem's LAN port to the WAN/Internet port on your new router. Plug in the new router's power adapter and wait for the status lights to indicate a stable connection, typically signified by a solid white or green LED.
  4. Access the setup interface. Connect your computer or phone to the new router's default Wi-Fi network using the credentials printed on the device label. Open a web browser and enter the default IP address, such as 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1, to access the admin dashboard.
  5. Configure network settings. Follow the on-screen prompts to set your Network Name (SSID) and a strong WPA3 password. If your ISP requires a specific connection type like PPPoE or Static IP, enter those details now in the WAN settings menu.
  6. Return the rental hardware. Take the rental router to your ISP’s local retail store or ship it back using a provided return label. Obtain and save a receipt as proof of return to ensure the monthly rental charges are removed from your billing account immediately.
