How to Optimize Mesh Wi-Fi Node Placement

Learn the optimal way to position mesh Wi-Fi nodes for maximum coverage and consistent signal strength throughout your home.

1. Identify the core router position. Place your primary mesh node near the modem in an open, central location. Avoid placing it inside cabinets, behind televisions, or near large metal objects that obstruct wireless signals.
2. Maintain the optimal distance between nodes. Position satellite nodes no more than two rooms away from the primary node. An ideal distance is typically 20 to 30 feet, ensuring each node maintains a strong backhaul connection to the primary router.
3. Eliminate wireless interference. Keep satellite nodes at least 5 feet away from appliances that cause interference, such as microwave ovens, cordless phone bases, and baby monitors. These devices operate on similar frequencies and degrade network performance.
4. Check the signal strength in the app. Open your mesh system's companion app and navigate to the Network or Device section. Verify that each node shows a 'Strong' or 'Excellent' connection status to the gateway.
5. Fine-tune satellite node locations. If the app indicates a weak connection, move the satellite node closer to the primary router. Continue testing signal strength at your most-used locations, such as home offices or living rooms, until speeds stabilize.
