How to Pair AirPods with a Mac

Pairing AirPods with your Mac creates a seamless audio connection that works across all your Apple devices. Once connected, your AirPods will automatically appear as an available audio output device in macOS.

  1. Open your AirPods case near your Mac. Place your AirPods in their charging case and open the lid. Keep the case open and within a few feet of your Mac. The AirPods should be seated properly in their charging slots.
  2. Access Bluetooth settings on your Mac. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then select System Preferences (macOS Monterey and earlier) or System Settings (macOS Ventura and later). Click Bluetooth in the sidebar or main window.
  3. Put your AirPods in pairing mode. With the AirPods case open and near your Mac, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case. The status light will flash white, indicating the AirPods are in pairing mode.
  4. Select your AirPods from the device list. Your AirPods will appear in the Bluetooth preferences window under available devices. Click the Connect button next to your AirPods name. The status will change from Not Connected to Connected.
  5. Verify the connection. Click the Sound icon in the menu bar or go to System Preferences > Sound > Output. Your AirPods should appear as an available output device. Select them to start using them as your Mac's audio output.
  6. Test audio playback. Play music, a video, or any audio content to confirm your AirPods are working correctly. Adjust volume using your Mac's volume controls or the AirPods' touch controls if available.
