How to Set Up a Turntable with Modern Speakers

Modern speakers typically lack the specialized phono inputs that turntables require. You'll need to bridge this gap with either a preamp or a receiver that includes phono capabilities.

Identify your turntable's output type. Check if your turntable has a built-in preamp by looking for a switch labeled 'Phono/Line' on the back or bottom. If present, set it to 'Line'. If there's no switch or only RCA outputs labeled 'Phono', you'll need an external preamp.
Choose your connection method. For powered speakers without phono inputs, use a preamp between the turntable and speakers. For passive speakers, use a receiver or integrated amplifier with phono inputs. Bluetooth turntables can connect wirelessly to compatible speakers.
Connect the turntable to a preamp. Use RCA cables to connect the turntable's output jacks to the preamp's input jacks, matching red to red and white to white. Connect the turntable's ground wire to the preamp's ground terminal if present.
Connect the preamp to your speakers. Run RCA cables from the preamp's output to your powered speakers' line inputs. For speakers with multiple input options, choose 'Aux' or 'Line In'. Set the input selector on your speakers accordingly.
Position your speakers properly. Place speakers at ear level, angled slightly toward your listening position. Keep them at least 6 feet apart and away from walls to minimize bass buildup. Ensure equal distance from your turntable to avoid vibration feedback.
Test the connection and adjust levels. Start with low volume on both preamp and speakers. Place a record on the turntable, start playback, and gradually increase volume. Check both stereo channels are working by listening for sound from both speakers.
Fine-tune your audio settings. Adjust the tracking force and anti-skate on your turntable according to your cartridge specifications. Use your speakers' EQ controls to balance bass and treble to your preference. Test with different record types to ensure consistent performance.
