How to Set Up a Sonos System

Setting up a Sonos system creates a wireless multi-room audio network that streams music throughout your home. The Sonos app handles all configuration, from initial speaker discovery to room assignments and audio grouping.

  1. Download the Sonos app. Install the Sonos app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). For desktop setup, download Sonos S2 from sonos.com. Open the app and tap 'Set up a new system' when prompted.
  2. Connect your first speaker to power. Plug your Sonos speaker into a wall outlet using the included power cable. The status LED will flash white, then solid white when ready. For speakers with Ethernet ports like the Beam or Arc, you can optionally connect an Ethernet cable to your router for a wired connection.
  3. Add the speaker to your system. In the Sonos app, tap 'Add Product' and select your speaker model. Press and hold the Connect button (usually on the back or bottom) until you hear a chime. The app will automatically detect and connect to your speaker over your WiFi network.
  4. Configure WiFi settings. Select your WiFi network from the list and enter your network password. The speaker will connect to WiFi and the status LED will turn solid white. If using a wired connection, the app will automatically detect this and skip WiFi setup.
  5. Name your speaker and assign a room. Choose a room name like 'Living Room' or 'Kitchen' for your speaker. This name appears throughout the app and voice commands. Tap 'Done' to complete the initial setup for this speaker.
  6. Add music services. Tap 'Browse' in the app, then 'Add Music Services' to connect Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, or other streaming platforms. Sign in to each service using your existing account credentials. Free services like radio stations are automatically available.
  7. Add additional speakers. For each additional speaker, tap the Settings gear icon, select 'System', then 'Add Product'. Repeat the connection process for each new speaker, assigning unique room names. Speakers automatically join your existing Sonos network.
  8. Test multi-room functionality. Play music on one speaker, then tap the Rooms button at the bottom of the Now Playing screen. Select additional rooms to group speakers together, or use the volume slider to adjust individual room levels. Tap 'Done' to save your group.
