How to Set Up a Gaming PC for the First Time

Complete step-by-step guide to setting up your new gaming PC. From unboxing to installing drivers and optimizing settings for peak performance.

  1. Connect all hardware components. Connect your monitor to the graphics card's display port or HDMI output, not the motherboard. Plug in your keyboard and mouse to USB ports. Connect the power cable to your PSU and ensure the power switch on the back is set to ON position.
  2. Boot into BIOS and enable XMP/DOCP. Press Delete or F2 during startup to enter BIOS. Navigate to the memory settings and enable XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) to run your RAM at its rated speed. Save changes and exit BIOS.
  3. Install Windows and essential updates. Boot from your Windows installation media and follow the setup wizard. Connect to WiFi or ethernet during setup. After Windows installs, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install all available updates.
  4. Install motherboard chipset drivers. Download the latest chipset drivers from your motherboard manufacturer's website (ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.). Run the installer and restart when prompted. This ensures proper communication between your CPU and motherboard.
  5. Install graphics card drivers. Download GeForce Experience (NVIDIA) or AMD Software (AMD) from the official websites. Install the software and let it download the latest graphics drivers. Restart your system after installation completes.
  6. Configure Windows power and gaming settings. Set Windows power plan to High Performance in Control Panel > Power Options. Enable Game Mode in Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. Disable Windows Game DVR in Settings > Gaming > Captures to prevent performance drops.
  7. Install gaming platform and test performance. Install Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or your preferred gaming platform. Download a benchmark tool like UserBenchmark or 3DMark to test system performance. Run the benchmark to verify all components are functioning correctly.
