How to Set Up VR for PS5

PlayStation 5 supports both the original PlayStation VR and the newer PlayStation VR2 headsets, each with different setup requirements. This guide covers the complete installation process for both systems, including hardware connections, software configuration, and play area calibration.

  1. Connect the VR processor unit to your PS5. For original PSVR: Connect the HDMI cable from the processor unit's 'HDMI OUT' port to your PS5's HDMI port. Connect a second HDMI cable from your TV to the processor unit's 'HDMI TV' port. Plug the USB cable from the processor unit into any USB port on your PS5. For PSVR2: Connect the USB-C cable directly from the headset to the front USB-C port on your PS5.
  2. Power on the VR system. For original PSVR: Press the power button on the inline remote attached to the headset cable. The processor unit's LED should turn white. For PSVR2: The headset powers on automatically when connected to an active PS5 system. Check that the headset's status LED shows a steady white light.
  3. Install PlayStation VR software. Navigate to Settings > Accessories on your PS5 home screen. Select 'PlayStation VR' or 'PlayStation VR2' depending on your headset model. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the required system software. The PS5 will automatically detect your headset type and download the appropriate drivers.
  4. Calibrate the PlayStation Camera or inside-out tracking. For original PSVR: Position the PlayStation Camera 6 feet away from your play area at eye level when seated. Go to Settings > Devices > PlayStation Camera and run the calibration process. For PSVR2: The headset uses inside-out tracking with built-in cameras. Hold the headset and look around your play space slowly to let the system map your environment.
  5. Adjust headset fit and IPD settings. Put on the headset and use the headband adjustment dial to secure it comfortably. The display should sit centered over your eyes. For PSVR2: Use the lens adjustment dial to set your interpupillary distance (IPD). Go to Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Adjust Lens Distance and follow the eye measurement process.
  6. Set up your play area boundaries. For original PSVR: Stand in your play space and hold the PlayStation Move controllers. The system will guide you through marking your play area boundaries. For PSVR2: Put on the headset and use the Sense controllers to trace your play area perimeter. The system creates a virtual guardian boundary that appears when you approach the edges.
  7. Test VR functionality. Launch the PlayStation VR Demo Disc or download a free VR experience from the PlayStation Store. Put on the headset and verify that head tracking responds smoothly to your movements. Test controller tracking by moving the PlayStation Move or Sense controllers through your play space. Check that audio plays through the headset speakers or your preferred audio output.
