How to Set Up an Xbox Series X for the First Time

Setting up your Xbox Series X properly ensures optimal performance and access to all features. The initial setup process configures your console's network connection, display settings, and Xbox Live account integration.

  1. Connect the power and HDMI cables. Connect the included power cable to the back of the Xbox Series X and plug it into a wall outlet. Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT port on your console and to an HDMI input on your TV or monitor. The Xbox Series X requires HDMI 2.1 for 4K at 120Hz, but works with any HDMI port.
  2. Power on the console and TV. Press the Xbox button on the front of the console to power it on. Turn on your TV and select the correct HDMI input. The Xbox startup screen will appear, followed by the setup wizard.
  3. Select your language and location. Use your controller or the Xbox mobile app to navigate the setup screens. Select your preferred language from the list, then choose your country or region. This determines your Xbox Store region and available content.
  4. Connect to your network. Choose either wired or wireless connection. For wired, connect an Ethernet cable to the back of the console. For wireless, select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter the password. The console will test the connection and download any required updates.
  5. Sign in to your Microsoft account. Sign in with your existing Microsoft account or create a new one. If you have an Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass subscription, sign in with that account to access your benefits immediately. The console will sync your profile, achievements, and game library.
  6. Configure display and audio settings. The setup wizard will detect your TV's capabilities and configure optimal settings automatically. You can adjust display resolution, HDR settings, and audio output in Settings > General > TV & display options. Enable 4K, HDR10, and 120Hz if your display supports them.
  7. Set up storage and install games. Access Settings > System > Storage to view available space on your internal SSD. Install games from your library by going to My games & apps > Full library. For faster loading, keep frequently played games on the internal SSD and move others to external storage.
