How to Set Up a Nintendo Switch
Setting up a Nintendo Switch requires connecting the dock, charging the console, and configuring basic system settings. This process takes about 15 minutes and gets your Switch ready for both TV and handheld gaming.
- Connect the dock to your TV. Plug the AC adapter into the dock's USB-C port on the back. Connect the HDMI cable to the dock and your TV's HDMI input. Place the dock near your TV with at least 4 inches of clearance on all sides for ventilation.
- Attach the Joy-Con controllers. Slide the left Joy-Con onto the left rail of the Switch console until you hear a click. Repeat with the right Joy-Con on the right rail. The controllers should sit flush against the console with no gaps.
- Charge the console. Insert the Switch console into the dock with the screen facing the same direction as the dock's front. The console will begin charging automatically. Allow 3 hours for a full charge before first use.
- Power on and select language. Press and hold the power button on top of the console for 3 seconds. Select your language from the list using the left analog stick and press A to confirm. The system will display initial setup screens.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Select your Wi-Fi network from the available networks list. Enter your network password using the on-screen keyboard. Navigate with the analog stick and press A to select letters, then select OK when finished.
- Configure time zone and user settings. Select your time zone from the regional map. Choose whether to automatically adjust for daylight saving time. Create a user profile by selecting an icon and entering your nickname using the on-screen keyboard.
- Complete system update. Accept the system update when prompted. The download and installation takes 5-10 minutes depending on your internet speed. The console will restart automatically when the update completes.
