How to Set Up a Meta Quest Headset

Setting up a Meta Quest headset requires the Meta Quest mobile app, a Meta account, and proper room-scale configuration. This process establishes your VR play area and connects your headset to Wi-Fi for game downloads and social features.

1. Download the Meta Quest app. Install the Meta Quest app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Open the app and tap Get Started. The app handles headset pairing, game purchases, and social connections.
2. Create or sign in to your Meta account. Tap Create Account or Log In within the Meta Quest app. Enter your email, create a password, and verify your account through the confirmation email. Your Meta account syncs game purchases, friend lists, and progress across devices.
3. Power on and pair your headset. Hold the power button on the right side of your Quest headset until the Meta logo appears. Put on the headset and follow the on-screen pairing instructions. Select your headset model in the mobile app and confirm the pairing code displayed in both the app and headset.
4. Connect to Wi-Fi. Select your Wi-Fi network from the list in the headset interface. Enter your network password using the virtual keyboard or the mobile app keyboard feature. The headset requires internet access for initial setup, game downloads, and most features.
5. Adjust the headset fit. Loosen the side straps and top strap completely. Place the headset on your head with the display centered over your eyes. Tighten the side straps evenly, then adjust the top strap for balanced weight distribution. The headset should feel snug but not tight.
6. Configure hand tracking and controllers. Hold your hands in front of the headset cameras to calibrate hand tracking. Alternatively, pair the included Touch controllers by holding the Menu and Y buttons simultaneously until they appear in VR. Test both input methods to determine your preference.
7. Set up Guardian boundary. Select Stationary or Room-scale when prompted. For Room-scale, trace your play area perimeter by pointing the controller at the floor and walking along your boundaries. Ensure at least 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet of clear space for safe movement.
8. Complete initial software updates. Navigate to Settings > System > Software Update in the headset menu. Download and install any available updates. The headset will restart automatically after updates complete. This ensures access to the latest features and security improvements.
