How to Set Up a Gaming Desk

A properly configured gaming desk maximizes performance and comfort during extended gaming sessions. The right setup reduces fatigue, improves reaction times, and creates an organized workspace that enhances your gaming experience.

  1. Position your monitor at eye level. Place the top of your monitor screen at or slightly below eye level when sitting upright. The screen should be 20-26 inches from your face. For dual monitors, angle them slightly inward and ensure both screens align at the same height. Use a monitor arm or adjust your monitor stand to achieve the correct position.
  2. Install an under-desk cable tray. Mount a mesh cable tray underneath your desk using the provided screws. Route all power cables, USB cables, and audio cables through the tray. Keep power cables separated from data cables to prevent interference. Leave 2-3 inches of slack for each cable to allow movement without strain.
  3. Position your keyboard and mouse properly. Place your keyboard so your elbows bend at 90 degrees when typing. Your wrists should remain straight and hover slightly above the keyboard. Position your mouse at the same height as your keyboard with enough space for full arm movement. Consider a keyboard tray if your desk is too high.
  4. Set up bias lighting behind your monitor. Attach LED strip lights to the back of your monitor, ensuring even coverage around the perimeter. Connect the power adapter and set the brightness to 10% of your monitor's brightness level. Choose a neutral white color temperature around 6500K to reduce eye strain during long gaming sessions.
  5. Install a headphone stand and controller dock. Mount a headphone stand on the side or back edge of your desk to keep your gaming headset easily accessible and prevent cable tangling. Add a charging dock for wireless controllers near your dominant hand. Ensure both accessories don't interfere with your mouse movement area.
  6. Organize your desk surface. Keep only essential items on your desk surface: monitor, keyboard, mouse, and a drink coaster. Store games, controllers, and accessories in desk drawers or on shelves. Maintain a clear area of at least 12 inches around your mouse for unrestricted movement during gaming.
  7. Adjust your chair height and desk ergonomics. Set your chair height so your feet rest flat on the floor and your thighs are parallel to the ground. Your monitor should be an arm's length away when you lean back in your chair. Adjust your desk height if possible, or use a footrest if your desk is fixed and too high.
