How to Choose the Right External Monitor for Your Laptop

Maximize your laptop's screen real estate. Learn how to evaluate resolution, refresh rate, and connectivity to select the perfect external display.

  1. Define your primary use case. Identify if your workflow requires color accuracy for design, high refresh rates for gaming, or pixel density for text-heavy productivity. Designers should prioritize IPS panels with wide color gamuts, while gamers require low response times under 5ms. Productivity tasks benefit most from high-resolution screens and larger physical dimensions.
  2. Check your laptop's port capabilities. Inspect the physical outputs on your laptop chassis. Ensure the laptop supports display output through USB-C (Thunderbolt 4 or DisplayPort Alt Mode) or HDMI 2.1. Verify the maximum output resolution and refresh rate supported by your specific laptop model in the manufacturer's technical specifications document.
  3. Select the appropriate pixel density. Choose 1440p (QHD) for a balance of clarity and performance on screens up to 27 inches. Reserve 4K (UHD) for screen sizes 27 inches and larger to maintain high pixel density and sharpness. Avoid 1080p for monitors larger than 24 inches, as text will appear pixelated at standard viewing distances.
  4. Evaluate the panel technology. Choose In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels for the best color reproduction and viewing angles.
