How to Set Up an Insta360 Camera

Setting up an Insta360 camera requires downloading the companion app, pairing your device, and configuring basic recording settings. This process takes about 10 minutes and enables you to capture immersive 360-degree content immediately.

  1. Download the Insta360 app. Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) and search for 'Insta360'. Download the official Insta360 app that matches your camera model. The app icon displays the Insta360 logo with a circular camera design.
  2. Insert the microSD card and charge the camera. Insert a Class 10 microSD card (64GB or larger recommended) into the card slot on your camera. Connect the USB-C charging cable to the camera and plug it into a power source. Wait for the battery indicator to show full charge before proceeding.
  3. Power on and enter pairing mode. Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds until the camera turns on. The status LED will flash blue. On most models, press the WiFi button or navigate to Settings > WiFi on the camera's touchscreen to enable pairing mode.
  4. Connect your phone to the camera. Open the Insta360 app and tap 'Connect Camera'. Select your camera model from the list. Go to your phone's WiFi settings and connect to the network that starts with 'Insta360_' followed by your camera's serial number. Return to the Insta360 app when connected.
  5. Complete the initial setup wizard. Follow the in-app setup wizard to name your camera and set your preferred video resolution. For most users, select 5.7K at 30fps for the best balance of quality and file size. Choose 'Auto' for stabilization settings unless you have specific requirements.
  6. Update firmware and calibrate. Tap 'Settings' in the app and select 'Firmware Update' if prompted. Allow the update to complete without disconnecting. After updating, select 'Camera Calibration' and follow the on-screen instructions to optimize image quality for your specific unit.
  7. Test recording and preview. Tap the red record button in the app to start a test recording. Record for 10-15 seconds while slowly rotating the camera. Stop recording and tap the preview thumbnail to view your 360-degree video. Use pinch and swipe gestures to navigate around the spherical footage.
