Setting up your GoPro properly ensures optimal performance and prevents common recording issues. This guide covers the essential steps from unboxing to recording your first video.
- Insert the battery and microSD card. Open the side door by pressing the button and pulling down. Insert the battery with contacts facing inward until it clicks. Slide the microSD card into the slot above the battery with the label facing the LCD screen. Close the door firmly until you hear it click.
- Power on and complete initial setup. Press and hold the Mode button on the front for 2 seconds to turn on the GoPro. Select your language when prompted. Set the date and time using the touch screen or Mode and Shutter buttons to navigate. Choose your region for GPS and regulatory compliance.
- Download and connect the GoPro app. Download GoPro Quik from the App Store or Google Play. Open the app and tap Connect Your Camera. On your GoPro, go to Preferences > Connections > Connect Device > GoPro Quik App. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions to connect via Bluetooth and WiFi.
- Update firmware to the latest version. With the app connected, tap the camera icon in GoPro Quik. If a firmware update is available, tap Update Camera and keep both devices connected during the process. The GoPro will restart automatically when the update completes.
- Configure basic recording settings. On your GoPro, swipe down from the main screen to access Preferences. Set Video Resolution to 4K for highest quality or 1080p for longer recording time. Choose 60fps for smooth action or 30fps for standard recording. Set Photo mode to 12MP for best quality.
- Set up voice control and shortcuts. In Preferences, enable Voice Control to start recording hands-free by saying GoPro Start Recording. Configure the Connect button shortcut by going to Preferences > General > Shortcuts and selecting your preferred quick action like Start Recording or Take Photo.
- Test recording and playback. Press the Shutter button to start recording video or take a photo. The red recording light indicates active recording. Press Shutter again to stop. Swipe up from the main screen to access your media gallery and verify your content recorded properly.
