How to Choose a Power Bank
A technical guide to selecting the right portable charger based on capacity, output wattage, and port compatibility for your specific devices.
- Calculate your total capacity requirement. Identify the battery capacity (mAh) of your primary devices. Multiply the total capacity by 1.5 to account for energy conversion loss and heat, then select a power bank with at least that rated capacity.
- Check output wattage requirements. Confirm the power delivery (PD) requirements for your devices. Smartphones require 18W-20W, while laptops and tablets necessitate 45W-100W for sustained charging speeds.
- Select port configurations. Prioritize banks with USB-C Power Delivery ports for universal compatibility. Ensure the bank features enough ports to charge your hardware simultaneously without significant power throttling.
- Confirm safety certification. Only purchase banks that list UL, CE, or FCC certification. Look for explicit mentions of over-voltage, short-circuit, and temperature protection circuitry.
- Evaluate weight versus capacity. Determine the portability trade-off based on your travel habits. A 10,000mAh battery is sufficient for daily commuting, while 20,000mAh or higher is necessary for extended travel despite the significant increase in weight.
