How to Choose a MagSafe Charger

MagSafe chargers use magnetic alignment to wirelessly charge compatible iPhones at up to 15W. Choosing the right one depends on your device, charging needs, and budget.

  1. Check your iPhone compatibility. Verify your iPhone supports MagSafe charging. MagSafe works with iPhone 12 and later models. Earlier iPhones with wireless charging capability will charge at reduced speeds and without magnetic alignment.
  2. Determine your power needs. Choose 15W MagSafe for fastest charging speeds with compatible iPhones. Select 7.5W or 10W options for budget-conscious users or older devices. Higher wattage chargers work with lower-wattage devices but won't exceed the device's maximum charging rate.
  3. Select between official and third-party options. Apple's official MagSafe Charger guarantees compatibility and 15W charging speeds. Third-party MagSafe-compatible chargers cost less but may charge at reduced speeds or lack perfect magnetic alignment. Look for MFi certification on third-party options.
  4. Consider form factor and mounting. Standard MagSafe pucks work on flat surfaces and with most phone stands. MagSafe car mounts combine charging with navigation use. Desktop stands hold your phone at viewing angles while charging. Choose based on where you'll primarily use the charger.
  5. Check cable length and power adapter. Apple's MagSafe Charger includes a 1-meter USB-C cable but no power adapter. Ensure you have a 20W USB-C adapter for full-speed charging. Consider longer cables for bedside or desktop use where outlets may be distant.
  6. Evaluate case compatibility. MagSafe works through cases up to 3mm thick. MagSafe-compatible cases include built-in magnets for stronger connection. Non-MagSafe cases may prevent magnetic attachment or reduce charging efficiency. Test with your current case or plan to upgrade.
