How to Update Audio Drivers on Windows
Outdated audio drivers cause sound problems, audio dropouts, and hardware compatibility issues. Windows provides several methods to update these drivers automatically or manually.
- Open Device Manager. Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager from the menu. Alternatively, right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager. The Device Manager window displays all connected hardware components.
- Locate your audio device. Expand the 'Sound, video and game controllers' section by clicking the arrow next to it. Find your audio device in the list—it typically appears as 'Realtek High Definition Audio', 'IDT High Definition Audio CODEC', or your sound card manufacturer's name.
- Update the driver automatically. Right-click your audio device and select 'Update driver' from the context menu. Choose 'Search automatically for drivers' to let Windows find and install the latest driver. Windows will search your computer and Windows Update for compatible drivers.
- Use Windows Update for driver updates. Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I. Navigate to Update & Security, then click Windows Update. Click 'Check for updates' and allow Windows to download and install any available audio driver updates automatically.
- Download drivers from manufacturer website. If automatic updates fail, visit your computer manufacturer's support website or audio hardware manufacturer's site. Enter your model number or let the site detect your hardware automatically. Download the latest audio driver package for your specific Windows version.
- Install downloaded drivers. Run the downloaded driver installer as an administrator by right-clicking the file and selecting 'Run as administrator'. Follow the installation wizard prompts and restart your computer when prompted. The new drivers will load after the restart.
- Verify the update. Return to Device Manager and check that your audio device no longer shows warning symbols. Test your audio by playing music or adjusting volume levels. The driver version and date should reflect the recent update in the device properties.
