How to Add a New Email Account on Android

Adding an email account to your Android device connects your mail directly to the built-in Gmail app or your preferred email client. This process works for Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and any custom email provider with IMAP or POP3 support.

  1. Open the Gmail app. Tap the Gmail app icon on your home screen or app drawer. If you don't see Gmail, swipe up to access all apps and locate it there.
  2. Access account settings. Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner of the Gmail app. Select 'Add another account' from the dropdown menu.
  3. Choose your email provider. Select your email service from the list: Google, Outlook/Hotmail/Live, Yahoo, Exchange, or 'Other' for custom providers. Tap your selection to continue.
  4. Enter your email credentials. Type your complete email address and password. For Google accounts, you'll be redirected to sign in through your browser. For other providers, enter credentials directly in the app.
  5. Configure server settings if needed. For 'Other' email providers, Android will attempt automatic configuration. If this fails, manually enter incoming server settings (IMAP/POP3) and outgoing server settings (SMTP) provided by your email host.
  6. Set account preferences. Choose how often to check for new mail, whether to sync contacts and calendar, and set notification preferences. Tap 'Next' to complete the setup process.
  7. Verify the account setup. Your new email account now appears in the Gmail app sidebar. Tap the hamburger menu and switch between accounts by tapping different email addresses. Send a test email to confirm everything works correctly.
