How to Fix Chrome Running Slow

A slow Chrome browser kills productivity and wastes time. These systematic troubleshooting steps target the most common performance bottlenecks to restore Chrome's speed.

  1. Clear browsing data and cache. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (Cmd+Shift+Delete on Mac) to open Clear browsing data. Select 'All time' from the time range dropdown. Check 'Browsing history', 'Cookies and other site data', and 'Cached images and files'. Click Clear data.
  2. Disable unnecessary extensions. Type chrome://extensions in the address bar and press Enter. Review each extension and toggle off any you don't actively use. Remove extensions you no longer need by clicking Remove. Pay special attention to ad blockers and productivity extensions that scan every page.
  3. Update Chrome to the latest version. Click the three dots menu > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome automatically checks for updates and installs them. Restart Chrome when prompted. Outdated versions contain performance bugs that newer releases fix.
  4. Reset Chrome settings. Navigate to chrome://settings/reset. Click 'Restore settings to their original defaults'. Confirm by clicking Reset settings. This removes problematic configurations while keeping bookmarks and passwords intact.
  5. Check available RAM and close unused tabs. Press Shift+Esc to open Chrome Task Manager. Identify tabs using excessive memory and close them. Keep total Chrome memory usage under 50% of available RAM. Use bookmarks instead of keeping tabs open indefinitely.
  6. Disable hardware acceleration if graphics issues persist. Go to chrome://settings/system. Toggle off 'Use hardware acceleration when available'. Restart Chrome. This fixes performance issues caused by outdated or incompatible graphics drivers.
  7. Scan for malware and unwanted software. Navigate to chrome://settings/cleanup. Click Find harmful software and let Chrome scan your computer. Remove any detected threats. Malware often hijacks browser resources and injects unwanted content.
