How to Test Laptop Battery Capacity

Battery capacity degrades over time, reducing your laptop's runtime and performance. Testing your battery reveals its current health status and helps you determine if replacement is needed.

  1. Generate a battery report on Windows. Press Windows key + X and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Type 'powercfg /batteryreport' and press Enter. The system creates an HTML report and displays the file path, typically in your user folder.
  2. Check battery information on macOS. Hold the Option key and click the Apple menu, then select System Information. Navigate to Power in the left sidebar. Look for 'Cycle Count' and 'Condition' under Battery Information to assess battery health.
  3. Analyze design capacity versus full charge capacity. Open the battery report and locate the 'Design Capacity' and 'Full Charge Capacity' values. Divide the full charge capacity by the design capacity, then multiply by 100 to get your battery health percentage. A result below 80% indicates significant degradation.
  4. Review charge cycles and usage history. Examine the 'Usage' and 'Battery Usage' sections in the report to see how your battery has performed over recent weeks. Check cycle count data to understand how many charge cycles your battery has completed.
  5. Use third-party battery testing software. Download HWiNFO64, BatteryInfoView, or similar battery monitoring tools for real-time capacity testing. Install and run the software to see detailed battery statistics including wear level, voltage, and temperature readings.
  6. Perform a calibration test. Charge your laptop to 100%, then use it normally until the battery completely drains and the laptop shuts down. Immediately plug in the charger and charge to 100% without interruption. This calibrates the battery meter for more accurate capacity readings.
