How to Reset Bluetooth Module on Mac
Resetting the Bluetooth module clears corrupt connection data and resolves pairing failures, audio dropouts, and device recognition problems on Mac. This process removes all paired devices and resets Bluetooth preferences to factory defaults.
- Enable Bluetooth Debug Menu. Hold Shift + Option and click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar. This reveals the hidden Bluetooth Debug menu with advanced options. If the Bluetooth icon is not visible in the menu bar, enable it in System Preferences > Bluetooth > Show Bluetooth in menu bar.
- Reset Bluetooth Module. From the Bluetooth Debug menu, select Reset the Bluetooth module. A confirmation dialog appears asking if you want to reset all attached Apple wireless devices. Click OK to proceed. Your Mac will immediately disconnect from all Bluetooth devices.
- Restart Your Mac. Click Apple menu > Restart to complete the reset process. The system needs to reload Bluetooth drivers and initialize the hardware module. Wait for the Mac to fully boot before testing Bluetooth functionality.
- Alternative Terminal Method. Open Terminal and run sudo pkill bluetoothd to force-quit the Bluetooth daemon. Enter your admin password when prompted. The Bluetooth service automatically restarts within seconds, effectively resetting the module without removing paired devices.
- Delete Bluetooth Preference Files. Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist. Move to /Library/Preferences/ and delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist there as well. Empty the Trash and restart your Mac to rebuild these preference files from scratch.
- Re-pair Your Devices. Open System Preferences > Bluetooth and put your devices in pairing mode. Click Connect next to each device as it appears in the list. Enter pairing codes when prompted and test functionality with each device before adding the next one.
