How to Recover Deleted Files on Windows
Files deleted on Windows aren't immediately erased from your hard drive. Windows provides built-in recovery options through the Recycle Bin and File History, while specialized software can recover files even after permanent deletion.
- Check the Recycle Bin. Open the Recycle Bin by double-clicking its desktop icon or typing 'Recycle Bin' in the Start menu search. Locate your deleted file, right-click it, and select 'Restore'. The file returns to its original location with full permissions intact.
- Use File History for previous versions. Right-click the folder that contained your deleted file and select 'Restore previous versions'. Windows displays available backup snapshots from File History or System Restore points. Select the version containing your file and click 'Restore' or 'Open' to browse the snapshot.
- Search with Windows File Recovery. Download Microsoft's Windows File Recovery tool from the Microsoft Store. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run 'winfr C: D: /n \Users\[username]\Documents\filename.ext' replacing C: with your source drive, D: with recovery destination, and the path with your file location. The tool scans for recoverable data.
- Try third-party recovery software. Install recovery software like Recuva, PhotoRec, or TestDisk. Launch the application and select the drive containing your deleted files. Choose the file types to recover and start the scan. Preview recoverable files and select those you want to restore to a different drive.
- Check cloud service trash folders. Log into OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox through your web browser. Navigate to the trash, recycle bin, or deleted files section. Select the files you need and click restore. The files return to their original cloud folders and sync back to your local machine.
- Restore from system backup. Open Settings > Update & Security > Backup > More options > Restore files from a current backup. Browse through available backup dates and locate your deleted files. Select the files and choose 'Restore to original location' or specify a new destination folder.
