How to Fix Windows Stuck on Blue Screen

A blue screen of death (BSOD) indicates a critical system error that forced Windows to stop. This typically happens due to hardware failures, driver conflicts, or corrupted system files that require immediate attention.

  1. Force restart your computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds until the computer shuts down completely. Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to restart. If the blue screen appears again immediately, proceed to the next step.
  2. Boot into Safe Mode. Restart your computer and immediately press F8 repeatedly during startup. Select 'Safe Mode' from the Advanced Boot Options menu. If F8 doesn't work, hold Shift while clicking Restart from the sign-in screen, then navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart > Press 4 for Safe Mode.
  3. Check for recent system changes. Open Device Manager by right-clicking This PC > Properties > Device Manager. Look for devices with yellow warning triangles. Right-click any problematic devices and select 'Uninstall device'. Also uninstall any recently installed software through Settings > Apps.
  4. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic. Press Windows key + R, type 'mdsched.exe' and press Enter. Select 'Restart now and check for problems'. Your computer will restart and test RAM for errors. After the test completes and Windows loads, check results in Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System.
  5. Run System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as administrator by searching 'cmd', right-clicking Command Prompt, and selecting 'Run as administrator'. Type 'sfc /scannow' and press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete. If errors are found, run 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth' followed by another 'sfc /scannow'.
  6. Update or rollback drivers. In Device Manager, right-click your graphics card, network adapter, and storage controllers. Select 'Update driver' > 'Search automatically'. If problems persist, right-click the same devices and select 'Properties' > 'Driver' tab > 'Roll Back Driver' if available.
  7. Perform System Restore. Search 'Create a restore point' and open System Properties. Click 'System Restore' and choose 'Next'. Select a restore point from before the blue screen issues began. Click 'Next' > 'Finish' and allow the restoration to complete.
