How to Fix Streaky Printer Output

Streaky printer output appears as horizontal lines, gaps, or inconsistent ink coverage across your prints. This issue stems from clogged printheads, misaligned cartridges, or contaminated ink systems that disrupt proper ink flow.

1. Run the built-in print head cleaning cycle. Open your printer's control panel or software on your computer. Navigate to Maintenance > Clean Print Heads (HP), Head Cleaning (Canon), or Print Head Cleaning (Epson). Run the cleaning cycle once and print a test page to check results.
2. Print an alignment test page. Access your printer settings through the control panel or computer software. Select Maintenance > Align Print Heads or Print Head Alignment. Follow the on-screen prompts to print the alignment pattern and select the best-aligned sample when prompted.
3. Check and replace low ink cartridges. Open your printer's cartridge compartment and examine each cartridge for low ink levels or dried ink around the nozzles. Replace any cartridges showing less than 25% ink remaining or visible dried ink buildup on the printhead contacts.
4. Clean the printhead manually. Power off the printer and remove the ink cartridges. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently wipe the printhead nozzles in one direction. For stubborn clogs, use isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) instead of water. Allow 10 minutes to dry before reinstalling cartridges.
5. Verify paper quality and settings. Ensure you're using paper appropriate for your print job — photo paper for photos, plain paper for documents. In your print dialog, confirm the paper type setting matches your actual paper. Streaks often occur when using photo settings with plain paper or vice versa.
6. Perform a deep cleaning cycle. If streaks persist after standard cleaning, access your printer's advanced maintenance menu. Select Deep Clean, Power Clean, or similar intensive cleaning option. This process takes 5-10 minutes and uses more ink but removes stubborn clogs that standard cleaning misses.
