How to Fix Spinning Wheel on Mac

The spinning wheel cursor indicates your Mac is processing a task that's taking longer than expected or an app has become unresponsive. This guide walks through systematic steps to identify and resolve the issue causing the spinning wheel.

  1. Force quit the unresponsive application. Press Command + Option + Escape to open Force Quit Applications. Select the problematic app from the list and click Force Quit. If the spinning wheel appears system-wide, identify the app consuming the most CPU in Activity Monitor first.
  2. Check available storage space. Click the Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Ensure you have at least 10-15% of your total storage capacity free. If storage is nearly full, delete unnecessary files or move them to external storage.
  3. Reset NVRAM and SMC. Shut down your Mac completely. For Intel Macs, restart while holding Command + Option + P + R for 20 seconds. For Apple Silicon Macs, the SMC resets automatically on restart. For Intel MacBooks, shut down, press Shift + Control + Option on the left side plus the power button for 10 seconds.
  4. Boot in Safe Mode. Restart your Mac and immediately hold the Shift key until you see the login screen. Safe Mode loads only essential system software and runs basic diagnostic checks. Log in and test if the spinning wheel issue persists.
  5. Update macOS and applications. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates. Open the App Store and click your profile icon to update installed apps. Restart your Mac after all updates complete.
  6. Run Disk Utility First Aid. Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities. Select your startup disk from the sidebar and click First Aid. Click Run to check for and repair disk errors. The process may take 30-60 minutes depending on disk size.
  7. Create a new user account for testing. Go to System Settings > Users & Groups and click Add Account. Create a standard user account and log into it. Test if the spinning wheel occurs in the new account to determine if the issue is user-specific or system-wide.
