How to Fix Speakers Not Working

Silent speakers can stem from software settings, driver issues, or hardware failures. This guide walks through systematic troubleshooting to restore audio output on any system.

  1. Check physical connections and power. Verify all cables are securely connected to the correct ports. For USB speakers, try a different USB port. For 3.5mm speakers, ensure the cable is fully inserted into the audio jack. Check that powered speakers are plugged into a working outlet and the power switch is on.
  2. Verify system volume and mute settings. Check the system volume in your taskbar or menu bar. On Windows, right-click the speaker icon and select Open Volume Mixer to check individual app volumes. On Mac, click the volume icon in the menu bar. Ensure nothing is muted and volume levels are above 50%.
  3. Select the correct audio output device. Windows: Right-click the speaker icon, select Sounds, then Playback tab. Right-click your speakers and Set as Default Device. Mac: Go to System Preferences > Sound > Output tab and select your speakers. Test audio immediately after changing the default device.
  4. Update or reinstall audio drivers. Windows: Open Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your audio device, and select Update driver. If that fails, select Uninstall device, then restart your computer. Mac users should check System Preferences > Software Update for any available updates.
  5. Run audio troubleshooter. Windows: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Playing Audio > Run the troubleshooter. Mac: Hold Option and click the volume icon, then select your speakers and check for any error messages or unusual settings.
  6. Test with different speakers or headphones. Connect a different set of speakers or headphones to the same port. If the new device works, your original speakers are faulty. If the new device also fails, the issue is with your computer's audio output.
  7. Reset audio services. Windows: Press Win + R, type services.msc, find Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, right-click each and Restart. Mac: Reset NVRAM by shutting down, then holding Option + Command + P + R while powering on until you hear the startup sound twice.
