How to Fix No Sound on Windows
Windows audio problems can stem from simple volume settings to corrupted drivers or disabled services. This guide walks through systematic troubleshooting steps to diagnose and fix sound issues on Windows 10 and 11.
- Check volume and mute settings. Click the speaker icon in the system tray and verify the volume slider is above zero. If you see a speaker icon with an X, click it to unmute. Right-click the volume icon and select Open Volume mixer to check individual app volumes.
- Verify the correct playback device. Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select Open Sound settings. Under Output, check that the correct device is selected from the dropdown menu. If you see multiple options, try switching between them.
- Run Windows Audio Troubleshooter. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Playing Audio and click Run. Follow the prompts and allow Windows to detect and automatically fix common audio problems.
- Restart Windows Audio services. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Locate Windows Audio service, right-click it, and select Restart. Also restart Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service. Close the Services window when complete.
- Update or reinstall audio drivers. Right-click Start button and select Device Manager. Expand Audio inputs and outputs, right-click your audio device, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers. If no updates are found, select Uninstall device, then restart your computer.
- Check audio format compatibility. Right-click the speaker icon and select Open Sound settings. Click Device properties under your output device, then Additional device properties. In the Advanced tab, try different bit depths and sample rates from the dropdown menu.
- Reset Windows audio to defaults. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Search for and select your audio driver software, then click Advanced options > Reset. For system-wide reset, open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings > Playback tab, select your device, click Properties > Advanced > Restore Defaults.
