How to Fix Low Disk Space Warning on Windows
Windows displays low disk space warnings when your system drive falls below 15% free space. This degrades performance and prevents updates from installing. These steps will reclaim storage and eliminate the warning.
- Run Disk Cleanup utility. Press Windows + R, type 'cleanmgr' and press Enter. Select your system drive (usually C:) and click OK. Check all boxes except 'Downloads' and click 'Clean up system files' for additional options. Select temporary files, system cache, and previous Windows installations, then click Delete Files.
- Clear temporary files manually. Press Windows + R, type '%temp%' and press Enter. Select all files with Ctrl + A and delete them. Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp and repeat the process. Some files may be in use—skip these and continue.
- Uninstall unused programs. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Sort by 'Size' to see largest programs first. Uninstall programs you no longer use, focusing on games, media software, and development tools. Click the three dots next to each program and select Uninstall.
- Move files to external storage. Open File Explorer and navigate to your user folder. Move large folders like Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Downloads to an external drive or cloud storage. Right-click each folder, select Cut, navigate to your external location, and paste.
- Disable hibernation file. Open Command Prompt as Administrator by pressing Windows + X and selecting 'Terminal (Admin)'. Type 'powercfg /hibernate off' and press Enter. This removes the hiberfil.sys file, which equals your RAM size in disk space.
- Reduce system restore space. Right-click 'This PC' and select Properties. Click 'System protection' in the left panel. Select your system drive and click Configure. Reduce the 'Max Usage' slider to 5-10% or disable system protection entirely if you have other backup solutions.
- Clear browser cache and downloads. Open your browser's settings and clear browsing data for 'All time', including cached images, files, and downloads. In Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete. Check your Downloads folder and delete old files you no longer need.
