How to Fix Low Disk Space Warning on Mac

Mac's low disk space warning appears when your startup disk has less than 10GB of free space available. This warning can slow down your system and prevent software updates from installing properly.

  1. Check current storage usage. Click the Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage. Review the colored storage breakdown to identify which categories consume the most space. Note how much free space remains on your Macintosh HD.
  2. Empty the Trash completely. Right-click the Trash in your Dock and select Empty Trash. Confirm the deletion when prompted. This immediately frees up space from recently deleted files that were still taking up disk space.
  3. Enable Optimize Storage recommendations. Open Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage → Recommendations. Enable Store in iCloud, Optimize Storage, Empty Trash Automatically, and Reduce Clutter. Each option shows potential space savings before you enable it.
  4. Clear Downloads folder. Open Finder and navigate to Downloads in the sidebar. Sort by Date Modified to see oldest files first. Delete installation files, old documents, and files you no longer need. Large video and disk image files often accumulate here.
  5. Remove cache files manually. Open Finder and press Command + Shift + G. Type ~/Library/Caches and press Enter. Delete the contents of cache folders for applications you recognize. Restart your Mac to regenerate essential cache files.
  6. Uninstall unused applications. Open Launchpad and identify applications you haven't used recently. Drag unused apps to the Trash or use Finder → Applications to delete them properly. Large applications like games, design software, or development tools free up significant space.
  7. Clear browser data and downloads. In Safari, go to Safari menu → Clear History and choose All History. For Chrome, press Command + Shift + Delete and select all time ranges. Clear cached images, download history, and saved passwords you don't need.
