How to Fix High RAM Usage on Windows and Mac

High RAM usage slows your computer and causes applications to freeze or crash. This guide shows you how to identify memory-consuming processes and reclaim system resources.

  1. Open Task Manager or Activity Monitor. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Click the Memory column header to sort processes by RAM usage. On Mac, press Cmd+Space, type Activity Monitor, and press Enter. Click the Memory tab and sort by Memory column.
  2. Identify high-usage processes. Look for processes consuming more than 1GB of RAM or using an unusually high percentage. Common culprits include web browsers with many tabs, video editing software, games, and sometimes system processes like Windows Search or Spotlight indexing.
  3. End unnecessary processes. Right-click high-usage applications you don't need and select End Task (Windows) or Force Quit (Mac). Avoid ending system processes unless you're certain they're safe to terminate. Save work in any applications before closing them.
  4. Disable startup programs. On Windows, open Task Manager, click the Startup tab, and disable programs you don't need at boot. On Mac, go to System Settings > General > Login Items and remove unnecessary applications. Restart your computer to apply changes.
  5. Clear browser cache and extensions. In your web browser, clear cache and cookies from Settings. Remove or disable browser extensions you don't actively use. Consider using fewer browser tabs or bookmarking pages for later reading instead of keeping tabs open.
  6. Adjust virtual memory settings. On Windows, type sysdm.cpl in the Start menu, click Advanced tab, then Performance Settings. Under Virtual Memory, click Change and set a custom size equal to 1.5x your RAM amount. On Mac, virtual memory adjusts automatically but you can add more physical RAM if needed.
  7. Run system maintenance. On Windows, run Disk Cleanup and check for Windows Updates in Settings. Use built-in Windows Defender scan to check for malware. On Mac, run First Aid in Disk Utility and install macOS updates from System Settings > Software Update.
