How to Fix Google Drive Storage Full
When Google Drive reaches its 15GB limit, you cannot sync new files or receive emails in Gmail. This guide shows you how to reclaim storage space and prevent future storage issues.
- Check your current storage usage. Open drive.google.com and click the storage indicator in the bottom left corner. This shows how much space Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos are using. Note which service consumes the most storage.
- Empty your Google Drive trash. Click 'Trash' in the left sidebar of Google Drive. Select all items by clicking the checkbox at the top, then click 'Delete forever'. Confirm the deletion when prompted. Deleted files immediately free up storage space.
- Delete large files and folders. In Google Drive, click the storage indicator, then 'Storage used' to sort files by size. Delete unnecessary large files, old presentations, and redundant folders. Right-click files and select 'Remove' to send them to trash.
- Remove Google Photos backup. Open photos.google.com, click your profile picture, then 'Photos settings'. Under 'Back up & sync', turn off backup for devices you no longer need. Delete unwanted photos and videos, especially those in 'Original quality'.
- Clean up Gmail storage. Open Gmail and search for 'has:attachment larger:10M' to find emails with large attachments. Delete unnecessary emails with attachments, promotional emails, and old conversations. Empty Gmail trash by clicking 'Trash' then 'Empty Trash now'.
- Manage shared files. Click 'Shared with me' in Google Drive. Files shared with you don't count against your storage unless you add them to your Drive. Remove files from 'My Drive' that you added from shared folders but don't actively need.
- Upgrade your storage plan if needed. If cleaning up doesn't provide enough space, visit one.google.com/storage and click 'Get more storage'. Choose a Google One plan starting at $1.99/month for 100GB. Your additional storage activates immediately after purchase.
