How to Fix Car Bluetooth Audio Cutting Out
Bluetooth audio cutting out in your car disrupts your driving experience and indicates connection instability between your phone and car's infotainment system. These systematic troubleshooting steps resolve the most common causes of intermittent audio playback.
- Move your phone closer to the car's Bluetooth receiver. Place your phone within three feet of your car's infotainment display or dashboard center console. Physical obstructions like thick cases, metal objects, or placement in pockets can weaken the Bluetooth signal. Remove any thick protective cases temporarily to test if they're causing interference.
- Clear Bluetooth cache on your phone. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Bluetooth > Storage > Clear Cache. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This clears corrupted Bluetooth data that causes connection drops. You'll need to reconnect to all WiFi networks after this step.
- Delete and re-pair your phone with the car. In your car's infotainment system, access Bluetooth settings and delete your phone from the paired devices list. On your phone, go to Bluetooth settings and forget the car's connection. Restart both your phone and car, then pair them again from scratch following your car manufacturer's pairing process.
- Update your phone's operating system. Check for and install any available OS updates on your phone. Go to Settings > System Update on Android or Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone. Outdated software contains Bluetooth bugs that manufacturers fix in newer versions. Restart your phone after installing updates.
- Check for car infotainment system updates. Visit your car manufacturer's website and search for infotainment system updates using your vehicle's VIN or model year. Download updates to a USB drive and install them following the manufacturer's instructions. Many newer cars also check for updates automatically when connected to WiFi.
- Switch to a different audio codec. On Android phones, enable Developer Options by tapping Build Number seven times in About Phone. Go to Developer Options > Bluetooth Audio Codec and select SBC instead of aptX or LDAC. These advanced codecs can cause compatibility issues with older car systems. iPhone users cannot manually change codecs.
- Reset your car's infotainment system. Locate the reset procedure in your car's manual or hold the power button for 10-15 seconds while the car is running. Some cars require pressing specific button combinations like holding the home and back buttons simultaneously. This clears system glitches and corrupted pairing data.
