How to Fix Buffering on Streaming Services

Buffering interrupts your streaming experience when your internet connection can't keep up with video data demands. These steps address the most common causes, from network congestion to device limitations.

  1. Test your internet speed. Open a web browser and navigate to fast.com or speedtest.net. Run the speed test and compare results to your plan's advertised speeds. Streaming 4K video requires at least 25 Mbps, 1080p needs 5 Mbps, and 720p requires 3 Mbps.
  2. Close other apps and devices using bandwidth. Pause downloads, close cloud backup services, and disconnect unused devices from your network. Check for automatic updates running on computers, gaming consoles, or smart home devices. Each active connection reduces available bandwidth for streaming.
  3. Switch to a wired ethernet connection. Connect your streaming device directly to your router using an ethernet cable. This eliminates Wi-Fi interference and provides a more stable connection. If running cable isn't practical, move closer to your router and ensure no walls or large objects block the signal.
  4. Lower the video quality settings. Access your streaming app's settings and manually set video quality to 1080p or 720p instead of Auto or 4K. On Netflix, go to Account > Playback Settings. On YouTube, click the gear icon during playback and select Quality. This reduces bandwidth requirements immediately.
  5. Restart your modem and router. Unplug your modem for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and wait for full startup. Next, unplug your router for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for all lights to stabilize. This clears network congestion and refreshes your internet connection.
  6. Update your streaming app and device. Check for app updates in your device's app store and install any available updates. Also update your streaming device's system software through Settings > System Update or equivalent menu. Outdated software can cause compatibility issues that manifest as buffering.
  7. Clear the app's cache and data. On Android devices, go to Settings > Apps > [Streaming App] > Storage > Clear Cache. On smart TVs, uninstall and reinstall the streaming app. On computers, clear your browser cache or reinstall the desktop app. This removes corrupted temporary files that can slow streaming.
