How to Fix Bluetooth Only Working Close to the Device

Bluetooth devices that only function within arm's reach indicate signal interference or power management issues. These steps will restore normal 30-foot operating range for your Bluetooth connections.

  1. Reset the Bluetooth connection. Unpair the problematic device from your computer or phone's Bluetooth settings. Wait 10 seconds, then pair it again from scratch. This clears corrupted connection profiles that can limit range.
  2. Check for interference sources. Move away from WiFi routers, microwaves, baby monitors, and other 2.4GHz devices. These operate on the same frequency as Bluetooth and create dead zones. Test your Bluetooth device in a different room to confirm interference is the cause.
  3. Update Bluetooth drivers. Open Device Manager on Windows, expand Bluetooth, right-click your Bluetooth adapter and select Update driver. On Mac, check System Preferences > Software Update. Outdated drivers often cause range limitations and connection instability.
  4. Adjust power management settings. In Device Manager, right-click your Bluetooth adapter, select Properties > Power Management, and uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.' This prevents Windows from reducing Bluetooth transmission power.
  5. Change Bluetooth power class. Access your Bluetooth adapter's advanced properties in Device Manager and look for Power Class or Transmit Power settings. Change from Class 2 (10 meter range) to Class 1 (100 meter range) if available.
  6. Replace internal Bluetooth antenna. If other solutions fail, the internal Bluetooth antenna may be damaged or disconnected. Contact your device manufacturer or a repair service to inspect and replace the antenna assembly. This is common in laptops after drops or impacts.
