How to Fix Bluetooth Not Working on Mac

Bluetooth problems on Mac can prevent you from connecting wireless keyboards, mice, headphones, and other devices. These troubleshooting steps resolve the most common connectivity issues by resetting system preferences and clearing cached data.

  1. Check Bluetooth is enabled in System Preferences. Click the Apple menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth. Verify Bluetooth is turned on. If the toggle shows 'Turn Bluetooth Off', it's already enabled. If you see 'Turn Bluetooth On', click it to enable.
  2. Remove and re-pair the problematic device. In Bluetooth preferences, locate your device in the list. Click the 'X' next to the device name and select 'Remove' to unpair it. Put your device in pairing mode and click 'Connect' when it appears in the available devices list.
  3. Reset the Bluetooth module. Hold Shift + Option and click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar. Select 'Reset the Bluetooth module' from the debug menu. Click 'OK' to confirm. Your Mac will restart Bluetooth services and clear all cached device data.
  4. Delete Bluetooth preference files. Quit System Preferences. Open Finder and press ⌘ + Shift + G. Type '/Library/Preferences' and press Enter. Delete 'com.apple.Bluetooth.plist' if present. Restart your Mac to regenerate clean Bluetooth preferences.
  5. Reset SMC and NVRAM. Shut down your Mac completely. For Intel Macs, hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds, then release. For M1/M2 Macs, simply restart. After startup, hold ⌘ + Option + P + R during boot until you hear the startup chime twice.
  6. Update macOS and device firmware. Click Apple menu > About This Mac > Software Update. Install any available updates. Check your Bluetooth device manufacturer's website for firmware updates. Many audio devices have companion apps that handle firmware updates automatically.
  7. Check for interference and proximity. Move your Bluetooth device within 30 feet of your Mac with clear line of sight. Turn off other 2.4GHz devices like microwaves or older WiFi routers. Switch your WiFi to 5GHz if available to reduce interference on the 2.4GHz band.
