How to Fix Bluetooth Audio Stuttering

Bluetooth audio stuttering disrupts your listening experience with choppy playback, dropouts, and delays. This happens when your device struggles to maintain a stable wireless connection or processes audio data inefficiently.

  1. Check Bluetooth connection distance. Move your audio device within 10 feet of the source device. Remove physical obstacles like walls, metal objects, or other electronics between the devices. Bluetooth signals weaken significantly beyond 30 feet and interference increases with distance.
  2. Restart Bluetooth services. Turn off Bluetooth on both devices for 10 seconds, then turn it back on. On Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices and toggle the Bluetooth switch. On Mac, click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar and select Turn Bluetooth Off. On mobile devices, use the Settings app or Control Center.
  3. Forget and re-pair the audio device. Remove the Bluetooth audio device from your paired devices list, then pair it again. On Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices, click the three dots next to your device, and select Remove device. On Mac, hold Option and click the Bluetooth menu bar icon, then select Debug > Remove all devices.
  4. Update audio codec settings. Switch to a more stable audio codec if your device supports it. On Android, enable Developer Options, go to Bluetooth Audio Codec, and select SBC or AAC instead of aptX or LDAC. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > More Bluetooth settings and verify Advanced Audio is enabled.
  5. Close bandwidth-heavy applications. Exit applications that consume significant processing power or network bandwidth. Close video streaming apps, file downloads, video calls, or games running in the background. These applications compete for system resources needed for smooth Bluetooth audio processing.
  6. Reset network settings. Reset your device's network configuration to clear corrupted Bluetooth data. On iOS, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. On Android, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Network settings. On Windows, run 'netsh winsock reset' in Command Prompt as administrator.
  7. Update device drivers and firmware. Install the latest Bluetooth drivers for your computer and firmware updates for your audio device. On Windows, go to Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your adapter, and select Update driver. Check the audio device manufacturer's website or companion app for firmware updates.
