How to Fix a Slow Chromebook

A slow Chromebook can disrupt your workflow and productivity. Most performance issues stem from too many browser tabs, accumulated cache data, or resource-heavy extensions consuming system memory.

  1. Close unnecessary tabs and apps. Press Alt + Tab to see all open windows. Close tabs you're not actively using by clicking the X on each tab or pressing Ctrl + W. Open Task Manager with Shift + Esc to identify memory-hungry processes and end them by selecting the process and clicking 'End process'.
  2. Clear browsing data and cache. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete to open Clear browsing data. Select 'All time' from the time range dropdown. Check 'Cookies and other site data', 'Cached images and files', and 'Browsing history'. Click 'Clear data' and wait for the process to complete.
  3. Disable or remove unused extensions. Type chrome://extensions/ in the address bar and press Enter. Review your installed extensions and toggle off any you don't regularly use. For extensions you never use, click 'Remove' to uninstall them completely. Focus on removing extensions that run continuously in the background.
  4. Check available storage space. Click the time in the bottom right corner, then click the Settings gear icon. Select 'About Chrome OS' from the left sidebar, then click 'Detailed build information'. If storage is above 85% full, delete unnecessary downloads from the Files app or move files to Google Drive.
  5. Update Chrome OS. Go to Settings > About Chrome OS. Click 'Check for updates' and install any available updates. Your Chromebook will download and install updates automatically. Restart when prompted to complete the update process.
  6. Reset Chrome browser settings. If performance issues persist, type chrome://settings/reset in the address bar. Click 'Restore settings to their original defaults', then click 'Reset settings'. This removes extensions, clears temporary data, and resets your homepage and search engine without deleting bookmarks or passwords.
  7. Perform a hardware reset. As a last resort, power off your Chromebook completely. Hold Refresh + Power for 10 seconds, then release both keys. Press the Power button to turn on your Chromebook. This resets hardware components and can resolve persistent performance issues.
