How to Fix a Cracked Phone Screen

A cracked phone screen damages both functionality and resale value. Screen replacement requires precision but saves hundreds compared to professional repair costs.

  1. Power down and assess the damage. Turn off your phone completely by holding the power button and selecting shutdown. Examine the crack pattern under good lighting. Surface scratches on screen protectors appear different from deep cracks that penetrate the actual display glass. Take photos of the damage for insurance or warranty claims.
  2. Gather required tools and replacement parts. Order a replacement screen assembly specific to your exact phone model and generation. Essential tools include precision screwdrivers (typically Phillips #000), plastic prying tools, suction cups, tweezers, and a heat gun or hair dryer. Purchase a screen repair kit that includes adhesive strips and cleaning wipes.
  3. Create a clean workspace and remove the battery. Work on a clean, well-lit surface with an anti-static mat if available. Remove all screws from the phone's exterior, typically located near the charging port or around the edges. Disconnect the battery connector first to prevent electrical damage during repair. Keep screws organized in small containers labeled by location.
  4. Heat and separate the cracked screen. Apply gentle heat around the screen edges using a heat gun on low setting or hair dryer for 2-3 minutes. This softens the adhesive. Insert a thin prying tool between the screen and frame, working slowly around all edges. Use suction cups to lift the screen once edges are separated. Avoid pulling cables.
  5. Disconnect display cables and remove broken screen. Locate display connector cables beneath small metal shields or tape. Remove these protective covers with tweezers. Disconnect ribbon cables by lifting small plastic tabs or sliding connectors straight out. Note cable positions and orientations. Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone frame with plastic tools.
  6. Install the replacement screen assembly. Connect the new screen's ribbon cables in reverse order of removal. Ensure connectors click fully into place and protective covers are reinstalled. Test the screen by temporarily connecting the battery and powering on before final assembly. The display should respond to touch and show accurate colors.
  7. Apply adhesive and reassemble the phone. Remove old adhesive residue completely and apply new adhesive strips around the screen perimeter. Press the screen firmly into the frame, ensuring even gaps on all sides. Reconnect the battery and replace all screws in their original locations. Power on and test all functions including touch, cameras, and speakers.
